Aging gracefully is a concept that, upon closer investigation, looks different for every person. Some may have no issue with the development of lines and wrinkles anywhere on the body. Some may not mind a few worry lines on the forehead but feel concerned about the way that sagging eyelids are changing their appearance. We can understand that! When one feels youthful, energetic, and happy, they want their face to reflect it. Aging eyes tell lies, but the truth can be revealed through blepharoplasty, known as eyelid rejuvenation surgery.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a procedure that is done to tighten and lift the eyelids that have become thin and loose. The procedure can be done on the upper eyelids, where sagging tissue can obscure the natural crease and degrade the contour of the eyes. When the upper eyelids are saggy, they can look heavy and give the face an unfriendly appearance. Blepharoplasty may also be performed on the lower eyelids, where weak tissue allows fat pads to protrude as puffy bags. The looseness and puffiness of the lower eyelids can make the face look tired all the time.

In recent years, blepharoplasty has become one of the leading plastic surgery procedures. The surgery is minor so can often be performed using a local anesthetic that numbs the tissue around the eyes. Patients are also given a mild sedative to help them relax during their procedure. Many people have undergone blepharoplasty this way and find it perfectly comfortable.

During upper blepharoplasty, a tiny incision is made in the natural crease. Excess fat and skin that are contributing to sagging and heaviness are repositioned or trimmed away. This restores the natural crease in its proper location and makes the eyes appear more open. During lower blepharoplasty, a tiny incision is hidden just inside the lower eyelid. The removal or repositioning of fat and the tightening of superficial tissue restores the smooth transition from the upper cheek to the lower eyelid. Depending on the case, both areas may be treated in the same procedure. Additional options may include upper blepharoplasty and Botox or dermal fillers for more profound rejuvenation.

The eyes are a reflection of our inner selves. Don’t let them lie about who you are. Call (713) 668-7337 to schedule your blepharoplasty consultation at the Eye Institute of Houston.
